Think back to your youth. Think about the person in your childhood who shared new experiences and ideas with you. Perhaps it was a teacher, a coach, or a grandmother. Regardless, they introduced some magic into your world and your eyes opened like wild flowers. By becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, you too can turn little bits of magic into big moments in a child's life

Mentoring

ONLY TAKES 1 HOUR A WEEK

TO CHANGE A CHILD'S LIFE

  • Littles for Literacy -  Volunteers provide "Littles" with  one on one time and attention in their schools, typically one hour per week during the academic year. Teachers identify children who can most benefit from interaction with a caring adult.

  • Mentoring Children of Promise   - Volunteers spend a few hours a month either in school or other activities providing a positive role to this unique group of children. Records indicate that children of incarcerated parents have 70% chance  of being incarcerated themselves. The MCOP program will help these children break the cycle by establishing a one on one mentoring relationship with a caring adult.

  •  Community Based - Volunteers provide "Littles" with one on one and time and attention in their communities, typically two to four times a month. During these unstructured outings they cultivate relations that provide children with skills to manager everyday challenges. Through simple friendship, "Bigs" experience the joy of helping children discover a world of possibilities and opportunities.

  •  ARC - Targets high school students who are at risk of dropping out.  We have partnered with the Senior Friendship Center to utilize the wealth of knowledge that our retired citizens hold.  Students are matched with seniors trained by the BBBS staff.  They meet for on hour a week, in school.  The program is based on a ten session workbook emphasizing personal responsibility for developing positive decision making skills. Two additional sessions will include a give back to the community activity.  Our agency has partnered with the Dept. of Elder Affairs to coordinate a "Day of Helping" to assist a citizen that is in need of assistance with yard work, etc.
